Powder Bath Makeover

a modern twist with floral accents

It's Labor Day weekend, and I sit here before my computer typing and truly understanding the irony of this blog post. The fruits of one's labor are filled with joy, accomplishment, and pride (among many other emotions). Whether sowing the fruits of a garden, the gains of a lucrative career, or the simple joy of small projects you can check off the "to-do" list, there is great closure in what we accomplish through hard work and labor. So as I reflect on the incredible summer we have been afforded, I cannot help but feel that small projects, like this one, define a sense of what this holiday is all about.

We set out with some very basic goals this summer: (1) Enjoy some much-needed down time; (2) Accomplish some small household projects; and (3) Travel. I purposely gave myself only a couple of small design projects as I wanted the majority of the summer months to be spent focusing on my children and experiencing the joy and wonder of simply BEING with them. I knew that our small powder bath, located in the mudroom area of our home, needed an update. It's the bathroom that is most used by guests and gets a lot of overall traffic. So I set out to reimagine the space and spent next to nothing doing so. A gallon of paint, a custom fabric shade, a new light fixture, two picture frames, a towel bar and toilet paper holder did the trick. I spent about $250 in total and have a new space that I love!

The existing walls were covered in a mustard yellow which I absolutely loved five years ago, but have since grown tired of. Our powder bath is small and only has one window. So naturally, I should stay away from dark colors right? Wrong! I wanted something bold and rich and decided to just go for it. I painted a few grays with green undertones on the wall before finally deciding on 'Patio Stone' by Behr. As any paint looks when wet - it was dark and I thought I made a mistake in the color. But as it dried and the sunlight poured in, it was perfect! I do most painting in our home by myself and find it to be therapeutic. Yet I must admit, small spaces are often the most challenging to paint, and this was no exception.

When styling this space after the paint dried I found that I really loved most of what was in there before, but it had really been lost in the mustard yellow backdrop. I especially fell in love with my mirror all over again and the print I framed by Taryn Whiteaker: "Don't Hurry. Don't Worry. Do your best and flush the rest."

The show stopper in this space is undoubtedly the custom soft roman shade by Comfortex. This is the second room in my home where Comfortex has designed one-of-a-kind window treatments for me and let me tell you - AMAZING! You can see photos of my kitchen window treatments HERE.

The fabric I selected for this room is called ARTISTRY and the color is LAKESTORM. It is a soft roman shade and with a quick pull goes up or down. No strings, wands or anything else needed. Simple and elegant. I love the abstract appeal of the pattern and feel like it really makes the space complete.

The natural wood picture frames came from Target and were only $13 each! I've linked them for you HERE.  In the frame I used a floral craft paper from AC Moore that I bought last year and the mirror was an old find from Homegoods that I used in my master bedroom at one point. Together, I think they look great!

This vanity lighting is from Home Depot and came in this incredible bronze finish where some of the metal was oil-rubbed and some was not. The result is modern and eye-catching. The product can be found HERE.

I hope you enjoyed seeing this small, but impactful transformation. Below are some more photos and links to the towel and toilet paper bars. Remember, you don't always have to spend a ton of money to redecorate a space. Sometimes a little elbow grease and imagination can do the trick. Enjoy the holiday weekend friends!
