a cute & easy garden project
The concept of 'time' seems to be luxury idea for me these days. I don't recall another point in my life where I've been busier but I don't want to give up on the simple pleasures of life. For me, a full-blown garden this summer seems like it may be out of the question (stay tuned) but a simple little herb garden seemed feasible thanks to the help of Target's dollar-bin.
If you have about 20 minutes and $10-15 then I have the perfect little garden project for you. Everything pictured below was found in the Target dollar-bins (my favorite little bins on this planet) with the exception of the planting cups and soil (those were in the outdoor section of Target). I purchased the herb labels and stands, an adorable little "grow" sign (sign was $3 and other items were $1/each) and a already had the handled wooden box around my house.
In the outdoor section I found a small bag of potting soil and the small planting cups. You can also pick from a variety of seeds - I selected all the herbs that I like to use. To start, simply fill your garden cups 3/4 of the way full with the soil. Next, spread your seeds according to the directions and then sprinkle a little more soil over the top.
After that, I cut out the herb rub-on decals onto the metal stands and placed them into the corresponding garden cups. This step was super easy and my kids loved helping out.
Lastly, I used a livestock feeding pan that I bought from Tractor Supply last summer and placed the herb garden box in there so that it could hold any water that spills out. I set this little spot up on my front porch where I get lots of good sun all day! Underneath the garden pan, I hung that adorable $3 'GROW' sign and voila --- that's it!!
Remember - you don't have to spend lots of money to have that little garden you want this summer. Sometimes less is more, and with that busy lifestyle that so many of us live, it's a way to grow and get our kids involved in tending to something that doesn't need a ton of work.
