Interior 'Board & Batten' Design

This design element is not just for barns and stables

Texture is often the forgotten element of design. Most homes (including mine) consist of painted sheetrock walls and white ceilings. We can thank modern-day designers and builders (like Chip & Joanna Gaines) for bringing back shiplap walls and other textures that you would've found standard in old, historic homes. The craze for custom interior looks has further been fueled by the DIY community on websites such as Pinterest, Houzz, Hometalk, etc. - sharing their tips on simple 'do-it-yourself' projects that have great impact! This is so true of board & batten --- an easy and impactful way to customize any room in your room.

Traditionally we see board & batten used on barns and farm homes. Today, we are seeing this design element used more and more on the interior walls and stairwells of homes. Often in pattern and color, but mostly in traditional white vertical planks, this textural design element packs a big punch. Here is a look at some of my favorite uses of the popular design element:

CLASSIC LOOK: White, Full-Wall Vertical

My personal favorite of all the looks and uses!!! You will ABSOLUTELY see this as a future DIY makeover project on my blog sooner than later! I just love the simplicity and elegance it brings to just about any space. It looks even better (if you ask me) in a stark white on white. The shadows of each board give movement and grace to the home and add instant warmth.

MOLDING LOOK: Partial Wall, Various Patterns

A fun twist on traditional wainscoting, this design can easily incorporate the use of wallpaper, color paint, and various heights. It especially looks nice in bedrooms, dining spaces and living rooms.

STATEMENT LOOK: Color, Various patterns, both full & partial wall

Modern and bold, I love how color and pattern transforms these rooms. Whether an accent wall or an entire space, this is a great way to gain impact without spending a fortune. Modern grays and muted tans are my favorite but I bet you could use just about any color with this statement look. Works well on a individual wall or in a small space such as an entryway.
